The government has set aside an additional of Sh6.5 billion to the Ministry of Education for hiring more teachers and improving educational infrastructure in the country. This is a boost to TSC to add the so needed number of teachers in the sector.
While addressing the nation on Saturday, President Uhuru Kenyatta said that the money will be used to cushion the education sector from the negative effects of Covid-19 pandemic.
The President said that part of the Sh.6.5 billion will be used to hire 10,000 teachers and 1,000 ICT interns during this Covid-19 pandemic season. He cited a need for change from the stay at home and cessation of movement norm.
He said the government is committed to ensuring there is continuous education despite the challenges the country is facing during the pandemic
School Reopening Modalities
“As a government, we are committed to ensure there is continuous education during this period. As a government, we will be coming up with new guidelines to ensure education continues,” said President Kenyatta.
This comes some few days after TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia revealed that the commission has a shortage of around 50,000 teachers. Speaking before the parliamentary committee. Dr. Macharia revealed that most counties are in a dire need of teachers due to the looming shortage.
