QuickMart IPO Sparks Foreign Rush With 122.7% Oversubscription Ahead of NSE Listing

NAIROBI, KENYA — Retail chain QuickMart Plc has concluded its Initial Public Offering (IPO) on a high note, posting a 122.7% subscription rate after pulling in KSh 18.41 billion in total investor applications.
The offer, priced at KSh 7.50 per share for 2 billion existing shares on sale by majority owner Sokoni Retail Kenya Limited, originally targeted a KSh 15 billion capital raise. Official transaction data released ahead of the debut shows that 18,492 separate applications flooded in for 2.45 billion shares, creating an excess demand of over 454 million shares valued at KSh 3.41 billion.

Allotment Breakdown: Regional Investors Secure Full Allocation

Despite the overall oversubscription, allocation policies favored local and regional participation. Both retail investors and institutional buyers across Kenya and the wider East African Community (EAC) received 100% of their requested shares.
  • Kenyan & EAC Retail: Bids totaled KSh 2.39 billion (132.6% of indicative pool), resulting in 177.11 million shares allotted.
  • Kenyan & EAC Institutions: Subscribed at 109.4% of their initial pool and were fully accommodated with 723.50 million shares.
  • Foreign Institutional Investors: Foreign demand exploded to nearly three times their initial allocation (298.0%). Due to foreign ownership caps and priority rules for domestic investors, foreign applicants saw their allocations scaled back to a 49.4% allotment rate, securing 235.21 million shares.

Secondary Market Outlook: NSE Secondary Trading Anticipated

With foreign institutional demand heavily scaled back, market analysts project significant buying pressure from international funds once trading commences on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). The company will list under the ticker QMRT at an implied total market valuation of KSh 30 billion.
“The strong appetite from foreign funds—even within a tight allotment structure—points to pent-up global interest in East African consumer retail assets,” noted market analysts following the allotment notice.

Settlement & Listing Timeline

Institutional applicants and clearing agents are finalizing settlements ahead of the exchange launch:
  1. November 10, 2026: Deadline for qualified institutional investors to remit final payments for allotted shares.
  2. November 11, 2026: Crediting of allocated shares directly into Central Depository and Settlement (CDS) accounts, alongside the commencement of refund transfers for unallocated foreign funds.
  3. November 12, 2026: Formal bell-ringing ceremony and official commencement of public trading on the Main Investment Segment of the NSE.
