Manchester United Consider To Release Goalkeeper André Onana On Loan

Manchester United is reportedly considering loaning out goalkeeper André Onana as part of a wider shake-up of the club’s goalkeeping department. The move, which is being discussed under the watch of new manager Ruben Amorim, comes after a turbulent first season for Onana at Old Trafford, where he has faced criticism for inconsistent performances and costly errors in high-stakes matches.

Onana joined United in 2023 from Inter Milan for a reported £47.2 million as the successor to long-serving goalkeeper David de Gea. His arrival was expected to usher in a new era of modern goalkeeping, particularly with his strength in distribution and playing out from the back.

However, despite flashes of brilliance, Onana has struggled to find consistency and was often at the center of criticism during United’s challenging 2023/24 campaign, which ended without a Champions League spot.

According to media reports, Amorim is now open to allowing Onana to leave on loan during the summer transfer window. The idea is to relieve pressure on the underperforming Cameroonian international while giving United space to recruit a new number one.

United are already scouting replacements. Names on the radar include Lucas Chevalier of Lille, Marco Carnesecchi of Atalanta, and even high-profile goalkeepers like Emiliano Martinez and Diogo Costa, who could bring stability and confidence to the backline. Amorim, known for his tactical discipline, is keen to restructure the defense and sees the goalkeeper position as central to that mission.

While the loan move remains under consideration, Onana is said to prefer staying at Old Trafford to prove his worth. Reports indicate that he has not requested to leave and is committed to regaining his form.

However, he has also attracted interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League, with teams reportedly willing to match his wages, though his preference remains to stay in top-flight European football. French side AS Monaco has also shown interest, but it is unclear if a formal bid has been made.

The speculation around Onana’s future adds another layer to Manchester United’s already active transfer window. With major changes expected across the squad, including midfield and defensive reinforcements, a decision regarding the club’s goalkeeping future could set the tone for the rest of the rebuild.

Onana’s departure, even if temporary, would mark a significant turning point. He was seen as a cornerstone of United’s tactical evolution under Erik ten Hag and, more recently, Amorim. However, the pressures of Premier League football and the weight of expectation appear to have taken their toll.

As the summer window heats up, United’s next move will be closely watched. Whether Onana gets a second chance to redeem himself in red or finds a fresh start elsewhere, one thing is clear: Manchester United is intent on reconfiguring its backline—and its ambitions—for the coming season.
