Kenya Ports Authority Begins Construction of New Gates to Enhance Cargo Flow at Mombasa Port
The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has officially announced the commencement of civil works at the Port of Mombasa, effective Monday, July 14, 2025, as part of the implementation of the Cargo Inventory Management System (CIMS). The project, which includes the construction of new Pre-in and Out Gates (Gates 23 and 24), is aimed at automating cargo and truck movement for greater operational efficiency.
According to a customer notice signed by the Chairman of CIT-CIMS, the initiative marks a significant milestone in modernizing Kenya’s principal seaport and improving service delivery for port users. The upgrade is expected to streamline clearance processes, reduce congestion, and minimize delays at the port’s entry and exit points.
Traffic Redirection and Temporary Measures
To ensure uninterrupted services and maintain business continuity during the six-week construction period, the civil works will be conducted in two phases. Meanwhile, alternative gates have been designated for various categories of cargo and port users:
- Domestic/CFS Full Import Consignments: Gates 9, 10, 18, and 20
- Transit Full Import Consignments: Gates 24A, 25B, and 18
- Transit Full Export Cargo: Gate 23A
- Domestic Full Export Containers: Gate 9
- Loose Cargo Import Trucks: Gates 18, 12, and 9
- Loose Export Cargo: Gate 9A
- Empty Containers: Gate 18
- Imported Motor Vehicles: Gates 12, 10, and 18
- Private Vehicles Exiting the Port: Gates 12, 10, and 18
The Authority has called on drivers, port staff, and visitors to strictly adhere to the new routing instructions to avoid delays and ensure smooth operations during the construction period.
