University of Nairobi Announces 50% Reduction in Hostel Accommodation Rates for 2025/2026 Academic Year
The University of Nairobi has announced a significant 50% reduction in hostel accommodation rates for the upcoming academic year, 2025/2026. The decision, approved by the University Council, aims to make student housing more affordable.
In an internal memo dated August 6, 2025, Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. M. Jesang Hutchinson revealed the new rates: a single room will now cost KSh 21,500, while a double room will be priced at KSh 15,500. Both rates reflect a 50% reduction compared to the previous year’s charges.
The memo notes that this reduction will be valid for only one academic year. While the initiative will ease the financial burden on students, it is expected to result in an annual budget deficit of approximately KSh 151 million.
Prof. Hutchinson urged students to take good care of the hostels to help reduce high maintenance costs. She also expressed gratitude to the University Council Members for their “magnanimous decision” and wished them well in their new roles steering the institution toward academic excellence and global competitiveness.
This move is seen as a welcome relief for many students facing rising costs of living, and it aligns with the university’s efforts to enhance affordability and accessibility in higher education.
