Quickmart Responds Injuries And Deaths Rumors After OTC and Ruiru Protests

Popular supermarket chain Quickmart has strongly denied viral reports suggesting that deaths occurred at its OTC and Ruiru branches during the nationwide demonstrations held on June 25.

In an official statement issued yesterday on June 26, the retailer confirmed that although the two outlets were affected by the protests, no staff, customers, or members of the public were injured or killed, contrary to circulating social media claims.

The protests, which erupted across Kenya in opposition to government policies and rising living costs, saw sections of Nairobi and surrounding towns descend into chaos. Quickmart’s OTC (One-Stop Tropical Centre) outlet in downtown Nairobi became a flashpoint, drawing heightened police presence and widespread speculation online. Some digital platforms shared alarming claims alleging that bodies had been hidden within the premises, stoking public fear.

In response, Quickmart issued a formal clarification:

“Contrary to misleading information circulating on digital platforms, we wish to assure the public that no staff, customers, or any other individuals were injured or deceased at the two outlets. The safety and security of our employees, customers, and the wider community remain our top priorities.”

The retailer acknowledged that the unrest posed a significant challenge but emphasized its swift efforts to restore operations and ensure safety for both staff and shoppers.

“We are actively engaging all necessary measures to ensure continued service excellence and to support our shoppers and staff during this time.”

Quickmart also advised customers of the affected branches to access services at their nearest alternative outlets while recovery efforts are ongoing. The company assured the public that it remains fully committed to transparency and will continue to issue updates as the situation evolves.

The company’s denial follows a wave of viral posts, including videos and images shared by activists and citizens showing a heavy security presence at the OTC branch. These visuals fueled unfounded rumors of fatalities and alleged cover-ups. One particularly prominent claim suggested that up to 30 bodies were being concealed inside the store—a claim that Quickmart has categorically dismissed as false and irresponsible.

The broader context of the demonstrations paints a grim picture: According to Amnesty International Kenya and other human rights observers, at least 16 people lost their lives nationwide during the June 25 protests, with over 400 others injured. Nairobi witnessed some of the most intense confrontations between demonstrators and security forces, leading to disruptions of business operations, damage to property, and temporary closures of retail outlets.

As civil society and the government work toward restoring order and investigating any excessive use of force, businesses like Quickmart are focusing on recovery and public reassurance. The chain has been widely praised for its prompt response and clear communication, which helped curb panic and dispel misinformation.

Quickmart’s statement concludes with a reaffirmation of its dedication to community welfare:

“Quickmart remains dedicated to caring for our community and will continue to keep the public informed as we work towards stability and recovery.”

With continued public vigilance and responsible communication, the retail giant hopes to contribute to the broader effort of restoring normalcy in the wake of one of the most turbulent civic episodes in recent memory.
