AliExpress Adds More African Currencies To Its Payment Options

Beginning this March, AliExpress has expanded its ability to accept payments in local currencies across several African nations, including South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Morocco, and Tanzania. This move is designed to make transactions more convenient and secure for customers in these regions.

AliExpress, a global online retail platform, announced on Tuesday 17th March that it is broadening its payment options for African shoppers in an effort to enhance the online shopping experience across the continent. This initiative follows the successful rollout of various local mobile payment solutions last year, which helped improve access to international products for many consumers.

This latest expansion introduces local-currency payment options to countries such as South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Morocco, and Tanzania. The goal is to provide users with a smoother and more secure way to shop.

“AliExpress features a diverse range of products from hundreds of thousands of merchants, and we are excited to connect African consumers with our offerings through initiatives such as integrating local-currency payments,” said Bonny Zhao, Director of AliExpress Business. “We recognize that cross-border online shopping can be overwhelming due to payment and logistics complexities. Our commitment is to simplify these processes, making global e-commerce more accessible and enjoyable for consumers in this vibrant market.”

The new payment options build on earlier integrations of M-Pesa in Kenya, as well as Opay and Verve card payments in Nigeria. The announcement comes just ahead of AliExpress’s biggest annual sale, taking place from March 17 to March 26, during which shoppers can take advantage of special coupons and the ease of paying in their local currencies.

Over the past year, AliExpress has invested significantly in improving its services for African customers. In countries like Kenya, South Africa, Morocco, Nigeria, and Tanzania, delivery times for cross-border orders have been reduced to as little as 10 days, highlighting the company’s focus on efficient and dependable shipping. Additionally, AliExpress opened its first African showroom in Ethiopia, giving wholesale buyers the opportunity to explore curated product collections and place orders directly in-store.
