After 34 Years: Rugby Africa Backs Zimbabwe’s World Cup Push
Herbert Mensah, President of Rugby Africa, met His Excellency Emmerson Mnangagwa, President of Zimbabwe, at State House today. They discussed how Rugby Africa and Zimbabwe can support the Sables’ preparation for the Rugby World Cup 2027—one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
After 34 years, the Zimbabwe Sables qualified by winning the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup in Kampala. They’re the only African team to earn a spot via regional play, joining automatic qualifiers South Africa’s Springboks, four-time world champions.
Organized by the Zimbabwe Rugby Union, the meeting underscores the need for governments, sports ministries, and continental bodies to provide structure, resources, and preparation for African teams.
Mensah said: “I had the honour of meeting President Emmerson Mnangagwa today. What stood out is how much the government cares about the Sables and rugby’s future here. That commitment drives success. To Zimbabwe: it’s not what we can do for you, but what you can do for Zimbabwe. This moment belongs to the country and its players. The Sables earned their place after 34 years—every Zimbabwean should be proud. With government, the union, and Rugby Africa united, possibilities are enormous. Our job: build structures, preparation, and unity so they carry national pride to the World Cup.”
Mensah reaffirmed Rugby Africa’s support through new leadership, better prep, and investment. He highlighted hosting more continental events in Zimbabwe and praised government backing for the Sables and rugby development.
The discussion stressed governments’ role in youth programs, high-performance setups, and pathways beyond infrastructure. Attendees included Steph Nel, World Rugby Senior High Performance Consultant for Africa, and David Gilbert, former Rugby Africa Vice President and current presidential adviser.
Zimbabwe’s qualification showcases government and rugby community resolve to reclaim global status. The 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia will feature top teams, spotlighting Africa’s rising talent.
