The State Department for Trade Extends Public Participation Period on Draft E-Commerce Policy

The State Department for Trade has officially extended the public participation period for the draft Kenya E-Commerce Policy. This move aims to encourage broader national engagement and gather more feedback from stakeholders, ensuring the policy reflects the diverse needs of the digital economy.

The draft policy, currently under development, is designed to create a structured framework that guides the growth, development, and regulation of e-commerce in Kenya. It seeks to enhance consumer protection, expand digital infrastructure, promote the development of digital skills, and support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). It also addresses key issues like bridging the digital divide and responding to climate change in the context of sustainable e-commerce.

According to the notice issued by the State Department for Trade, the draft policy has been developed in collaboration with stakeholders from government ministries, departments, agencies (MDAs), academia, and the private sector. These consultations are intended to ensure that the policy framework is inclusive, effective, and forward-looking.

Extended Consultation Period

Initially scheduled to conclude on 21st July 2025, the deadline for public submissions and comments has now been extended to 4th August 2025. The extension is meant to give additional time for individuals, businesses, and institutions to provide their input.

In addition, a hybrid public participation meeting—originally planned for 23rd July 2025—has been rescheduled to 6th August 2025 in Nairobi. The exact venue will be confirmed at a later date.

How to Participate

Members of the public and industry stakeholders are encouraged to share their views and comments via email at info@trade.go.ke. A copy of the draft E-Commerce Policy can be accessed online at the official State Department for Trade website: www.trade.go.ke.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive policy-making and a sustainable digital future, recognizing the central role of e-commerce in economic transformation and innovation.
