Man storms burial service in Busia and runs away with the coffin leaving mourners in shock

A somber burial ceremony in Busia turned into chaos on Saturday when a man stormed the service and ran off with the coffin, leaving mourners in shock and disbelief. The bizarre incident unfolded in the midst of a eulogy, as the man, identified as Kevin Otieno, disrupted the proceedings and made off with the casket containing the deceased.

Witnesses at the burial, which was taking place in a quiet village near Busia town, described the incident as surreal and horrifying. “He came out of nowhere, grabbed the coffin, and dashed off as we all watched in disbelief. Some mourners screamed, while others gave chase,” recounted one attendee.

Otieno reportedly fled with the coffin, dodging bewildered mourners as he made his way toward Busia town. Villagers who pursued him lost track, but local traders later reported seeing a man in the marketplace trying to sell a coffin.

“We were stunned when he approached us, claiming to have a high-quality coffin for sale at a discounted price,” said one shopkeeper. Suspicious of the man’s motives, traders alerted authorities, who quickly apprehended him.

During police interrogation, Otieno admitted to stealing the coffin, citing financial desperation as his motivation. He claimed he intended to sell the casket to raise money for personal debts. “I saw an opportunity and took it. I didn’t think of the consequences,” Otieno reportedly told officers.

The coffin, along with the deceased’s remains, was recovered and returned to the grieving family. The burial was postponed until the next day to allow for a cleansing ceremony, as community elders declared the act a grave spiritual offense.

The incident has sparked outrage among the local community, with many condemning Otieno’s actions as deeply disrespectful and sacrilegious.

“This is the first time we’ve ever seen such madness. A burial is sacred, and what he did was beyond comprehension,” said a village elder.

Religious leaders also weighed in, emphasizing the need for respect during such solemn occasions. “This shows a lack of humanity and reverence for the dead. Such acts must be condemned in the strongest terms,” said Pastor Emmanuel Wanyama, a local clergyman.
