Heritage, Innovation and Transformation: AUB Announces 17th General Assembly and 20th Anniversary in Banjul
The African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) will convene its 17th General Assembly from 14 to 17 April 2026 in Banjul, The Gambia, marking a milestone year as the organisation celebrates its 20th anniversary. The event will be held under the theme: “AUB, 20 Years Serving African Media: Heritage, Innovation and Transformation,” offering a strategic reflection on the evolution of African broadcasting and the path ahead for the continent’s media ecosystem.
Taking place amid rapid technological change, shifting audience behaviours and mounting economic pressures on both public and private media, the General Assembly will provide a vital platform for dialogue, collaboration and forward-looking policy discussion. AUB aims to honour the legacy of African broadcasters while encouraging innovation and reinforcing the institutional transformation required to meet the demands of a fast-evolving digital and multimedia landscape.
The high-level gathering will bring together senior media executives, broadcast industry leaders, policymakers, sports confederation representatives, academics, content creators, and experts from across Africa and beyond, alongside representatives of sister unions, partners and strategic stakeholders.
Key topics on the agenda include:
-
A review of AUB’s 20-year journey and impact on African media
-
The escalating cost of sports broadcasting rights and its implications for African broadcasters
-
Exploring sustainable and diversified funding models for media organisations
-
Innovation, digital transition and technological transformation across African broadcasting
The General Assembly will conclude with the AUB Media Awards Gala, one of the continent’s most prestigious audiovisual events. The gala will celebrate the creativity, excellence and achievements of African media professionals while also commemorating the 20th anniversary of the African Union of Broadcasting. Beyond recognition and celebration, the event will serve as a major fundraising initiative in support of the AUB Foundation Against Cancer (AFAC), which leverages the power of media to raise awareness and fight cancer across the continent.
With 85 member organisations, the African Union of Broadcasting is the largest broadcasting association in Africa, uniting public and private broadcasters from across the continent and beyond. AUB’s mission is to advance the development of radio, television and digital media in Africa, promote authentic African content, and strengthen industry collaboration through platforms such as AUBVision and its growing digital network.
