Originally launched in 2023 under the name “Project Tailwind,” NotebookLM uses Google’s advanced Gemini AI model to summarize, answer questions, and synthesize information from uploaded content such as PDFs, Google Docs, and websites. It caters to users in academia, business, and general productivity, enabling easy exploration and comprehension of complex materials.

One notable feature introduced in 2024 is “Audio Overviews,” which transforms document summaries into conversational, podcast-like audio. This function allows users to engage with summaries in a more interactive and accessible format, which has drawn attention from various users and media outlets. NotebookLM’s status as an experimental tool was removed in October 2024, indicating a shift toward broader, more stable use in professional and educational settings.
